Texas Hillel’s Summer of Engagement

The University of Texas at Austin is noticeably quieter and slower-paced during the summer months. During this time, however, Texas Hillel interns and staff start engaging new students and planning for the year ahead. While the upcoming programming calendar is still taking shape, we have had a successful summer meeting and connecting with new and prospective students.

Every Tuesday during UT orientations, Texas Hillel hosted bbqs for new and returning students. Summer Interns Adina Smirin and Dani Gross promoted the bbqs by tabling at the student orientation organization fairs and on social media. With new Board President Ian Spechler as grill master, new and returning students and recent graduates were treated to a kosher bbq feast. The laidback atmosphere perfectly lent itself to getting to know the new students and introducing them to Texas Hillel. The bbqs were a huge success with an average of 40 attendees. As Adina Smirin notes, “We exceeded expectations in terms of numbers. I am hoping that the interactions with new students will stick and continue. I am excited for what the new year holds.”
